Hearing Aid Do’s and Don’ts

Check out our top hearing aid do's and don'ts to help you keep your devices working optimally and adjust to them faster.

So you recently got your first pair of hearing aids, congrats! Not only has your journey toward better hearing begun, you’re also taking a step toward enjoying a better life. That being said, hearing aids can take some time to get used to. However, even if you’ve never worn hearing aids before or are switching styles or brands, learning how to properly care for and protect them is easy. Here are a few tips to help you get started with your devices and keep them performing optimally.

Hearing Aid Don’ts

Don’t Get Your Hearing Aids Wet – Although hearing aids can withstand a certain amount of water exposure, they aren’t meant to be worn while swimming or in the shower. You made an investment in your devices, so it’s important to keep them dry and in tip top shape.

Don’t Sleep With Your Hearing Aids – Hearing aids are not meant to be worn 24/7. Your devices, and most importantly your brain, need a break. Wearing your devices to bed can also cause them to get damaged as you toss and turn in your sleep.

Don’t Expose Your Hearing Aids to Excessive Temperatures – Your hearing aids should not be exposed to high temperatures because they may get damaged. Store your hearing aids in a cool, dry place when you’re not wearing them.

Don’t Leave Your Hearing Aids Lying Around – While hearing aids may range in size, they are all generally small devices (which means they are easy to lose). When you take them out, be sure to place them back in their case and store them in a safe and dry location.

Hearing Aid Do’s

Do Wear Your Hearing Aids Consistently – Depending on how new to hearing aids you may be, it’s best to start with two to four hours of wear per day then gradually work your way up so you can become accustomed to the sounds around you.

Do Exercise Caution When Inserting Your Hearing Aids – Hearing aids are relatively small, especially if you are wearing In-the-Ear (ITE) devices, which means they can easily get lost. To prevent this from happening, be sure to insert your hearing aids in an area that is well lit and clutter-free.

Do Clean Your Hearing Aids Daily – Ear wax and other types of residue can quickly build up on your hearing aids, hindering them from optimal performance. Clean your hearing aids daily to make sure there’s nothing getting in the way between you and better, clearer sound.

Do Make Sure Your Hearing Aids Are Charged – If your hearing aids use disposable batteries, be sure to replace them after about 70 hours of use time. If they use rechargeable batteries, charge them daily at night time.

The longer you use your hearing aids, the more accustomed to them you’ll become. Remember to stay patient. Before you know it, your hearing aids will feel completely natural.
